Building Background

“For students who arrive at school with a limited ‘school talk’ background, systematic
vocabulary instruction opens a door to a secret world.”

Word Nerds: Teaching All Students to Learn and Love Vocabulary

Introduction and Chapter 1 ....  I'm excited!  How about you?

The books are in!  (YEAH!)  This coming week, it is my goal to make sure you have the book in hand!  I'm teaching summer school, if you want to contact me at school...you know where to find me. :)  Otherwise, I will find you!

Obviously, our start date will need to change.  Let's try this: read the introduction and chapter 1.  After reading (or during the course of reading), post a comment about how the research presented new ah-ha's to you.  How does the researched-based content relate to your classroom? your students?

  1. When reading the introduction, I immediately thought of Sandy Leech. When I say "DIVERSITY" you say "DIFFERENT." The kids love doing the chant during assemblies, why not carry it over to our classroom and teaching vocabulary?

This year, our fifth grade team decided not to ask for vocabulary books due to the cost. This book study came at a wonderful transition in our pod. As I began reading chapter 1, it became apparent the lack of vocabulary books wouldn't be the only transition. "What's the Bid Deal About Vocabulary Instruction?" The new ELA CCSS 5.RI.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade five topic or subject area. AND 5.W.2d use precise language and domain specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.

I've really enjoyed this study. It is Marzano based and feeds right into our new CCSS. Be sure to check out the link on the home page to Teaching With A Touch Of Twang to see what others are thinking about the book.

  2. I am excited to study vocabulary strategies to help close the achievement gap. Student vocabulary from poverty homes is limited. It's my job to help the student's vocabulary instruction grow. I'm excited to find scientifically based research on instructional strategies to implement in my classroom.
